- Rodríguez, Trueba, and Berger’s films are vying to represent Spain in the race for the next Oscar for best film in a foreign language. The final candidate is to be announced on September 27

, Fernando Trueba’s The Artist and the Model (Trueba knows what it is to win an Oscar as he won it in 1993 for The Age of Beauty and last year was one of five finalists in the best animation feature category with Chico & Rita [+see also:

), and Pablo Berger’s Blancanieves (lit. “Snow White” - photo), and on September 27 will announce which of them will vie for the valuable statue.

While Unit 7 (production: Atípica Films, international sales: Film Factory Ent.) was released with notable success last April (and this success would clearly increase if it were chosen as Spain’s official candidate), The Artist and the Model (production: Fernando Trueba P. C., international sales: 6sales), and Blancanieves (production: Arcadia Motion Pictures and Noodles Production, international sales: Dreamcatchers) are to be released in Spain on September 28 (the first by Wanda Vision, and the second by Alta Films).

Curiously, only one of the three finalists, Unit 7, was shot in Spanish, while The Artist and the Model was shot in French and Blancanieves is a silent film.

From the international market’s point of view, Unit 7’s premiere took place during the last edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, while both El artista y la modelo and Blancanieves will be screened in the competition at the San Sebastian Film Festival (the latter following its world premiere on September 8 at the Toronto Film Festival).
