Documentaries and a few European films
- This week, German audiences will be able to choose from a great selection of documentaries, as well as a few new films also out in Austria.
As the sun makes a timid appearance in Germany, the country's distributors, also shy, this week have released a series of local documentaries. They are as varied as the tones and characters in House of Shame (photo), a documentary directed, produced, and distributed by Johanna Jackie Baier that appeared in the Panorama section at the 2011 Berlinale and that tells the tale of Chantal, who 12 years ago created the daily Berlin nighttime event after which the film is named. The documentary follows Chantal in the 1980s squats of Oranienstrasse, nightclubs, artist studios, and LGBT hangouts of her transgressive universe whose exuberance does not entirely hide its darker side.
As for Deutschland von oben by Petra Höfer and Freddie Röckenhaus, distributed by Universum, it explores the country from above, not its dark corners, while Knistern der Zeit - Christoph Schlingensief und sein Operndorf in Burkina Faso by Sibylle Dahrendorf follows film and theatre director Christoph Schlingensief to Africa on his latest project to found a community centred around life and art (distr. Filmgalerie 451). As for Mindjazz and Neue Visionen, they have hedged their bets on American documentaries about, respectively, music and sushi.
Polyband has released Spanish-German fiction Wolfsbrüder byGerardo Olivares, about a child raised by wolves in breathtaking natural settings, and Salzgeber has released Franco-German-Belgian co-production Black Ocean [+see also:
