BOX OFFICE Spain

Crisis? What crisis?

by

- Cinema ticket sales in Spain last year have shown an increase, in spite of predictions of a drop in takings

New figures released by the Spanish state film institute (the ICAA) show that 2002 was a better year at the box office than had been predicted. The organisation says that ticket sales for the year up to December 20, 2002 were worth Euros 618.5m. This is an increase of Euros 2.1m on the total for 2001, which was Euros 616.4m.
Previous estimates for 2002, released by the Spanish Film Academy, had predicted that the box office takings in Spain would be Euros 585m, a significant drop on the previous year.
The ICAA figures still have to be updated to take into account the new film releases at the end of December and the Institute is expected to publish the final totals for 2002 over the next couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, there's also been a good start to 2003 for Spanish cinema, with the runaway success of the film Mortadelo & Filemon - La Gran Aventura (Mortadelo & Filemon - The Big Adventure), by Javier Fesser. The action comedy, adapted from a comic, has taken Euros 15m in the 17 days since its release, catapulting it to third in the list of Spanish all-time hits at the box office.
