Captain Thunder finally bursts onto screens

by

After more than a decade of comings and goings, announcements and cancellations, rumours and denials, the film adaptation of comic book Captain Thunder is hitting the big screen. The project passed through the hands of several directors and producers (Juanma Bajo Ulloa, Daniel Calparsoro, Filmax) before it landed with Antonio Hernández, who has brought to the big screen the adventures of Captain Thunder, a Spanish knight at the time of the Third Crusade, and his loyal followers Goliath and Crispín, and Viking princess Sigrid.

Captain Thunder is being released in Spanish theatres by Buena Vista International Spain on a 270-print run. Sorolla Films and Maltés Producciones pumped generous resources into this ambitious production, which was originally supposed to be the first Spanish film shot entirely in 3D.

However, financing problems meant that filming couldn’t be done in stereoscopic format, but in 35mm, with the aim of converting it in post-production. In the end, the inferior quality that this type of print tends to have in 3D led to the creators deciding to opt for traditional 2D distribution.

The cast is headed by Sergio Peris-Mencheta in the lead role, alongside Natasha Yarovenko, Gary Piquer and Manuel Martínez.

The original comic book was created in 1956 by writer Víctor Mora and is still in print today, although its heyday was in those early decades, when it gained cult status like no other comic strip had done before, or possibly since. In Spain under the Franco regime, Captain Thunder’s adventures provided a much-needed dose of fantasy and escapism.
