rounds off an extraordinary year with today’s announcement by the Spanish Film Academy that it will be Spain’s entry in the Oscar category for Best Foreign Language Film.

This is the first time that the Film Academy has submitted a Catalan-language film for the Oscars, which is further proof of the current boom in the Catalan film industry.

Black Bread, which was released commercially in Spain a year ago, was, against all expectations, the top winner at the Goyas in February (see news). It will now try to repeat this success in Los Angeles, where its balance between a strong auteur touch and unquestionable commercial appeal could make it one of the favourites.
