The forthcoming feature by Spanish director Javier Rebollo (photo), El Muerto y Ser Feliz (“The Dead Man and Being Happy”), is one of the three co-productions presented by Spanish companies set to receive funding from the Ibermedia Programme, along with Antonio Trashorras’s Blind Alley (produced by Roxbury Pictures and Colombia’s Callejón Producciones), and Ana Piterbarg’s Everyone Has A Plan (Tornasol Films and Castafiore Films with Argentina’s Haddock Films).

(2009), both undisputed hits with the trade press (but less so with audiences). Shot entirely in Argentina, the film is co-produced by Spain’s Icónica, Lolita and Eddie Saeta with Argentina’s Utópica Cine and France’s Noodles.

El Muerto y Ser Feliz centres on a hitman who escapes from a hospital in Buenos Aires and “flees death by running towards it, like Sam Peckinpah’s characters, who have no choice left but to express themselves through their death”, Rebollo told Cineuropa.

Producer Gerardo Herrero’s two sister companies, Tornasol Films and Castafiore Films, are possibly the most active production companies when it comes to co-productions with South America, particularly Argentina, which makes them regulars for these subsidies (at past funding rounds, works including Ivan’s Dream, Criminal and Night Runner [+see also:

were selected). This time, it’s Argentinean helmer Piterbarg’s debut feature, which will star US actor Viggo Mortensen.

Everyone Has A Plan tells the story of Agustín who, after years of living in Buenos Aires, is desperate to leave behind what has become a frustrating existence. After the death of his twin brother, he decides to start a new life by taking on his brother’s identity and moving to the mysterious region of Delta.

Moreover, seven projects presented by Spanish production companies have been selected for development funding: Calle del Aire (produced by MLK); Cannibal (La Loma Blanca); Chronicle Beyond the Border (Cine de Garage); Mi Hermana y el Pato Rimbaldi (Gaila); Playing Lecuona (Trova Film); They Are All Dead (Avalon PC); and Y Pese A Todo (Vaca Films).
