The €50m 3D mega-production piloted by Fidélité Films has a stellar cast including Edouard Baer, Gérard Depardieu, Catherine Deneuve, Dany Boon, Fabrice Luchini,, Valérie Lemercier, Guillaume Gallienne, Vincent Lacoste, Gérard Jugnot, Jean Rochefort, Charlotte Le Bon, Germany’s Otto Götz and Belgian actors Stéphane De Groodt and Bouli Lanners.
Co-scripted by the director and Grégoire Vigneron based on René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s two comic books Asterix in Britain and Asterix and the Normans, the film opens in Britain invaded by Caesar (Luchini). The British Queen (Deneuve) sends Jolitorax (Anticlimax in English – Galienne) to seek help in Gaul, in the village of Asterix (Baer) and Obelix (Depardieu).
Asterix and Obelix set off for Britain with a barrel of magic potion, accompanied by the leader’s nephew, Goudurix (Justforkix – Lacoste), who only likes music and girls and whom they’ve been asked to toughen up. The Gauls discover the customs on the other side of the Channel while Caesar recruits the Norman Vikings (including Boon and Lanners) in his battle against the British.
But in London, our heroes loses the barrel and Goudurix is captured by the Normans who want him to teach them about fear. A frenzied hunt begins for the magic potion.
Produced by Olivier Delbosc and Marc Missonnier for Fidélité Films, Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia has co-production support from France 2 Cinéma, France 3 Cinéma and Belgium’s Scope Pictures. The 20-week shoot will take place in Malta (for the sea scenes), in a studio in Hungary (for the interiors) and in Ireland (for the beach scenes) until mid-September.
The film will be released in France on October 17, 2012 by Wild Bunch, who are also handling international sales. The latter are well underway with acquisitions made for Germany, Italy, Spain and Eastern Europe, among other territories.
