The race is officially on: the Academy has decided and announced the candidates for the 75th edition of cinema’s most sought-after award – the Oscar scheduled for 23 March in L.A.’s Kodak Theatre.

by Finland’s Aki Kaurismaki, Germany's Caroline Link with Nowhere in Africa [+see also:

and Zus & Zo by Holland’s Paula van der Oest. They are up against EL Crimen del Padre Amaro by Mexico’s Carlos Carrera and Hero by China’s Zhang Yimou.

was nominated for best direction and original screenplay.
Europe will be very well represented at the American event with numerous artists and films nominated in a variety of categories. The frontrunner is Roman Polanski whose Pianista [+see also:

received seven nominations including best film, actor in a leading role, director, cinematography, editing, costumes and best screenplay (adaptation).
Italy’s Dante Ferretti outdid himself when he rebuilt a sizeable chunk of mid-19th century New York in Rome’s Cinecittà Studios for Scorsese’s Gangs of New York and today he received his seventh Oscar nomination for best set design.
Two Londoners joined the race for the best actor in a leading role statuette: Michael Caine for The Quiet Americanand Daniel Day Lewis for his magnificent Bill the Butcher in Scorsese’s epic.
Unfortunately two hotly-touted favourites failed to get a nomination: French director François Ozon and his 8 Women [+see also:

and Roberto Benigni and his Pinocchio [+see also:

. The Italian did however score well at the Razzies that celebrate the worst films of the year. Benigni’s fairytale was nominated in six categories including worst film, direction and actor in a leading role.
