Storm hits Academy

- Marisa Paredes, the President of the Academy, is asked to resign after her controversial comments at the Goyas

At the end of a mammoth three-hour meeting, the Spanish Academy of Film Arts and Sciences presented letter of unanimous support for their president, Marisa Paredes, the object of criticism after her controversial comments at the presentation of the Goya Awards. The Academy said the event was a consequence of free use of freedom of expression and pointed out that the essence of the filmmaking profession is freedom. In a statement to Spanish news agency, EFE; Eduardo Campoy, the president of the Spanish Film Producers’ Federation (FAPAE) poured oil on troubled waters when he said:” Everyone said what they were supposed to say, but now we must unite and face the crisis.”
Today’s edition of Spanish daily newspaper, “El Paìs” features an interview with Oscar winning film director, Pedro Almodòvar in which he says that Campoy offered to sacrifice Marisa Paredes to restore tranquility to the government but he did in a private and personal manner, and Almodòvar voiced the fear that, “Marisa Parades’ blond head must stay where it is: at the top of the Academy that today, more than ever before, she voiced the worries shared by the majority of Spanish people both in social and political terms”
