BOX OFFICE Switzerland

Good year for Swiss cinema

by

According to provisional figures from ProCinema and the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, the market share for Swiss films has apparently risen compared to last year and stands at 5.18% for 2010 (not including co-productions).

, Christoph Schaub’s Julia’s Disappearance and Riccardo Signorell’s Champions also attracted wide audiences.

Another positive element noted by the Swiss Federal Office for Culture (OFC) is the great diversity of films on offer this year. Making it into the Top 30 Swiss films are many documentaries – a genre in which Jean-Stéphane Bron’s Cleveland Versus Wall Street [+see also:

and Vadim Jendreyko’s The Woman with the 5 Elephants garnered particularly high admissions.

On a more political level, the OFC is pleased with the results of the federal support mechanism for post-production, which has proven its effectiveness with the popular success of two films, Béatrice Bakhti’s Romans d’Ados 1-2-3-4 (“Teen Stories 1-2-3-4”) and Peter Bichsel’s Room 202. It is also delighted at Laurent Steiert’s appointment as acting head of the Film Section.

Finally, many projects started during the course of the year are expected to reach their conclusion in 2011. They could lead to a profound change in funding mechanisms for film and television and an easing of tensions that have increased in recent years between the various role-players in the Swiss audiovisual sector.
