- New Year's Honours list brings knighthoods for Ridley Scott and Alan Bates, and OBEs for Brenda Blethyn & Edward Fox

Ridley Scott, the British film director of cult sci-fi movie, Blade Runner, as well as of more recent worldwide hits like Thelma and Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down has been knighted in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. Scott, 65, is a three-time best director Oscar nominee for, respectively, Black Hawk Down (2001), Gladiator (2000) and Thelma and Louise (1991).
Actor Alan Bates, who recently played the butler in Robert Altman’s ironic take on class-ridden 19th Century England, Gosford Park, also becomes a knight of the realm.
Brenda Blethyn a two-time Oscar nominee: for best supporting actress in Little Voice (1999) and best actress in Mike Leigh’s landmark 1996 Secrets and Lies, becomes an Officer of the British Empire – OBE – as does fellow Thespian Edward Fox, whom filmgoers will remember for his portrayal of a cold killing machine in The Day of the Jackal.
