New hopes for the Soficas

by

The publication by the French General Tax and Duties Office (Direction Générale des Impôts) of the list of Soficas given their approval has contributed to reassuring the film industry after the anxiety generated earlier this month about the likely closure of the Soficas. (Soficas are regional agencies that fund and finance film and audiovisual production).
The annual amount of money at the Soficas disposal will also increase from the current Euros46 million to Euros48.23 million, thanks to new investors boarding the project, encouraged by a series of financial sweeteners that enabled more than 60 films to be made in 2001.
A total of seven Soficas have been given a new lease of life. Three of them are "newcomers" : Charentes Images, set up by the Poitou-Charentes region, who plan on investing Euros7million in cinema and TV films in the second half of 2003 ; Millifin, created by animation experts Millimage, will also have Euros7million to dispose of and the SanPaolo Bank and producers’ Thierry Wong and Pierre Forette’s Uniétoile will disburse Euros5million.
The four surviving Soficas are Cofimages, in its 15th year with an agreement for Euros9.15million, Sofécinéma with Euros6million ; Natexix Banques Populaires Images with Euros8million and Valor with 6.08million.
