European cinema swept the boards at the nominations for this year's Golden Globes. Assigned annually by the Hollywood foreign press association, this year's frontrunners include the dramatic WWII feature, The Pianist [+see also:

by Roman Polanski, a French-English-German and Polish co-production, whose star Adrien Brody was nominated in the best actor category.
France, Spain and Germany were each nominated in the best foreign film category for, respectively, Balzac and The Little Chinese Seamstress (co-produced with China) and directed by Sijie Dai, Speak to Her by Pedro Almodovar and Nowhere in Africa [+see also:

Unfortunately for Italy, Roberto Benigni's Pinocchio [+see also:

failed to win a nomination.
The contenders for the best comedy or musical comedy film include the UK's About A Boy [+see also:

by Chris e Paul Weitz and starring Hugh Grant, who was nominated for a best actor Globe, and Douglas McGrath's, Nicholas Nickleby, a US-UK coproduction.
However, with eight nominations to its name, including best comedy, and best actress for its two female stars, Welsh-born Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renée Zellweger, this year's favourite has to be the muscial comedy, Chicago.
