This year’s Goya nominations are a clear reflection of the excellent state of health that the Spanish film industry is enjoying: 28 films were nominated for the 22 Goya categories.
The Goyas will be presented in Madrid town hall on 1 February 2003. A good number of the films nominated have already found foreign buyers, they include Alex de la Iglesias’s 800 Balas - nominated for 4 Goyas (best actor, editing, SFX and original score), El embrujo de Shanghaї by Fernando Trueba (6 nominations including best screenplay and photography) and Historia de un beso by José Luis Garci – 7 nominations.
Almodovar, who won Goyas in 2000 for All About My Mother and in 1989 for Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown, and Léon de Aranda will be up against people like Antonio Hernandez with En la ciudad sin limites and Emilio Martinez Labaro for El otro lado de la cama.
The thespians nominated include Javier Bardem for Los Lunes al Sol and Javier Camarà for Speak to Her, and Leonor Watling will compete for the best actress Goya for her work in A mi madre gustan las mujeres.
