Kaurismaki wins Flanders Event

On 18 October, the jury of the Flanders Film Festival , presided over by the former artistic director of the Salzburg festival and the future director of the Paris Opéra, Gérard Mortier, presented Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki with their Gran Prix. He won the award for The Man Without a Past, a film that won the same award in Cannes earlier this year. The award is presented by Belgium’s Flemmish community.
As well as a cash prize for the director, the award includes Euros12,350 for the film’s distribution in Brussels and Flanders. The “Robert Wise” award for best director went to Germany’s Andreas Dresen (Nachtgestalten) for Halbe treppe (Grill Point). Best screenplay was won by Australia’s Rolf De Heer for The Tracker. The “George Delerue” award for best soundtrack was won by Canadian composer Howard Shore for David Cronenberg’s Spider. Shore also won the World Soundtrack Academy award for the his The Lord of the Rings score.
