Despite the fact that the title was made on only a €4m budget, it has garnered an estimated 1.4m admissions and €9m in receipts to date. The picture is a dazzling success which merits its extensive media coverage that analyses the reasons for the public’s infatuation with a story that revisits the tragedy of the French monks in Tibihirine in Algeria in 1996.

Released on September 8 through Mars Distribution on 252 prints, the Why Not production drew around 468,000 filmgoers to screens in its first week, then saw a rise in the number of prints to 424 prints in the second week, and 442 in the third week. Dominating all the new U.S. releases for 21 days, Beauvois’ work, which saw its ticket sales increase by 3% in the second week thanks to wider distribution, rose by 5% in the third week.
