, British director Steve McQueen will reunite with his star from the film Michael Fassbender for his next project, Shame.

Fassbender will play a 30-something New York resident who has difficulties with his sex life. The script, co-written by McQueen and Abi Morgan (Brick Lane [+see also:

), explores the nature of need, and how people live their lives and react to the experiences that shape them.

Film4 is co-financing while HanWay Films will be selling the project at the Toronto Film Festival. Production will begin in January 2011 after Fassbender wraps Matthew Vaughn's X-Men prequel.

Iain Canning, who served as executive producer on Hunger, is producing Shame, having developed the project through his Sydney-based company See-Saw Films.

Since Hunger, the German/Irish Fassbender has been extremely busy, appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds [+see also:

, Jimmy Hayward’s Jonah Hex, Neil Marshall's Centurion, Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre, David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method and Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire.

Fassbender won the IFTA and BIFA Best Actor awards for Hunger. The film won the Camera d’Or at Cannes in 2008, and the Gucci Prize at Venice, besides a host of other awards and McQueen won the Carl Foreman Award for the Most Promising Newcomer at the BAFTAs.
