Dujardin and Dupontel star in Blier’s The Sound of Ice Cubes

by

Shooting starts today in the Cévennes region on Bertrand Blier’s 17th feature, The Sound of Ice Cubes.

Four years after the release of his latest work, How Much Do You Love Me?, the director (selected four times in competition at Cannes in 1981, 1986 when his film earned Best Actor, 1989 when he won the Jury Prize, and 2003) has this time cast Jean Dujardin (OSS 117: Lost in Rio [+see also:

) as the starring duo in a scathing comedy about cancer and alcoholism.

The cast also includes Myriam Boyer (to be seen as of December 9 in Mensch [+see also:

), Anne Alvaro (Best Supporting Actress Cesar in 2001 for It Takes All Kinds), Audrey Dana (Welcome [+see also:

).

Penned by the director, the film centres on a failed writer and alcoholic (Dujardin) who receives a visit from the incarnation of his cancer (Dupontel) and lets him settle into his home. According to Dupontel, The Sound of Ice Cubes "is the best work Bertrand Blier has written since Evening Dress (1986). The dialogues are hilarious. In the story, the people who like the character of Jean see his cancer, but those who don’t like him don’t see it."

The Sound of Ice Cubes is produced by Christine Gozlan for Thelma Films and Catherine Bozorgan for Manchester Films. The budget of around €7m includes co-production support from France 2 Cinéma and Herodiade, as well as pre-sales from Canal + and Ciné Cinéma.

The seven-week shoot will take place near Anduze, not far from Nimes. Wild Bunch (also co-producer) is handling international sales and will release the film in French theatres in autumn 2010.
