Reno and Laurent star in The Round-Up

by

On July 16-17, 1942, over 13,000 Jews were arrested in Paris and its suburbs by French police who were zealous supporters of the German occupiers. Detained at Vel' d'Hiv (Vélodrome d'Hiver) and Drancy, they were then sent to the concentration camps.

This historical episode is explored in Roselyne Bosch’s second feature, The Round-Up, which started shooting in the French capital on May 14.

The film stars Jean Reno (who has just finished shooting Richard Berry’s L'Immortel), Mélanie Laurent (soon to appear in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds [+see also:

Penned by the director (who wrote the screenplays for 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Pact of Silence), The Round-Up traces the tragic destiny of three Jewish families (Traube, Weismann and Zygler) who are taken to Vel d’Hiv before being deported. Inspired by real-life characters (two of whom are still alive), the film centres on an Ashkenazi father (Elmaleh), a Jewish doctor (Reno) and a Red Cross nurse (Laurent), who all cross paths.

The subject of the Vel d'Hiv round-up was previously tackled on the big screen in UK director Joseph Losey’s Mr. Klein (1976), among other films.

Produced by Alain Goldman for Légende Films, The Round-Up has a budget of around €20m. The 14-week shoot is expected to last until mid-August and will take place in Paris and then Hungary, where part of Vel' d'Hiv' and Beaune-la-Rolande detention camp have been reconstructed.

The film’s joint co-producer Gaumont will manage domestic distribution, while Légende is handling international sales.
