Transylvania has Golden start

The eighth edition of the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) opens today in Cluj-Napoca with the latest feature written and produced by Cristian Mungiu, Tales From the Golden Age [+see also:

, selected in this year’s Un Certain Regard at Cannes.

Mungiu’s film is one of the highlights of the Romanian Days program, which includes festival hits such as Katalin Varga [+see also:

The latter film is also one of 12 contenders in the festival’s feature competition, which includes Maren Ade’s Everyone Else [+see also:

The international jury of the Transylvania Trophy is comprised of Catalan actress Assumpta Serna, American producer and actor Jim Stark, Hungarian director Szabolcs Hajdu, Israeli-Romanian journalist Dan Făinaru and Corina Şuteu, head of the New York Romanian Cultural Institute. The closing awards ceremony will be held on June 6.

The other important competition, Shadows Shorts, features 12 short horror films from nine countries, paired with the competition features.

TIFF 2009 also offers daily Drive-In screenings; a brand new section dedicated to outstanding Political Figures; the traditional Hungarian Day, showcasing recent Hungarian film hits; and Children’s Days, a special section dedicated to TIFF’s youngest viewers.
