Spain's “nueva ola” returns to Rome

The second edition of cinemaSpagna (running through May 10 in Rome) returns to present the “nueva ola” of Spanish cinema with six recent titles, including The Best of Me [+see also:

by Roser Aguilar, to whom the festival is dedicating a Special Event on May 8.

The programme reflects a thriving industry that gives voice and space to new talent and diverse genres: Belén MacíasMy Prison Yard [+see also:

(produced by Pedro Almodóvar), Gonzalo López-Gallego’s King of the Hill Xavi Puebla’s Welcome a Farewell-Gutmann and Pau Martínez’s El Kaserón. All the films are Italian premieres. The list is rounded out by established director Antonio Hernández’s latest work, El Menor de Los Males, starring Carmen Maura.

Festival guests include Spanish film muse Ariadna Gil and Marian Álvarez, 2007 Silver Leopard winner at Locarno 2007, as well as directors David Trueba and Isaki Lacuesta, and producer Joan Ginard, discoverer of new talent.

The festival, directed by Federico Sartori and Iris Martín-Peralta, also pays homage to the 70th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War, and to the debut films in Spain of master filmmaker Marco Ferreri.
