Belgium scores

- Belgian filmgoers will delight in this autumn's selection of strong domestic titles including Dorothée Van den Berghe’s Meisje and the Dardenne brothers’ Le fils

As if to underline the newfound vim and vigour of its national film industry, a record number of Belgian productions are scheduled for a domestic release over the next few weeks. The first on the list is Flemmish director Dorothée Van den Berghe’s Meisje, scheduled for September 4. This Belgian and Dutch co-production tells the story of how three women deal with a particularly difficult experience and it won the Young Audience and the CICAE (the European Art House Association) awards at the recent Locarno film festival. The second week of September will see the release of Belgian screenwriter, Philippe Blasbend’s directorial feature debut, Un Un honnête commerçant, scheduled for screening at the Montreal and Venice film festivals.
September 25 is the chosen date for the release of two first films: Montreal 2001 “discovery” Vincent Lannoo’s Strass and Bénédicte Liénard’s Une part du ciel about women factory workers and prisoners. This co-production by Belgium, France and Luxemburg was made with money from Arte, RTBF, Canal+ and Eurimages. The Dardenne brothers’ le Fils is scheduled to close the Namur French-language film festival on October 4. The star of the film, Olivier Gourmet was Best Actor at Cannes this year. The film will be released nationwide on October 9.
