“Documentary film can trigger social changes”
- Interview with Stanisław Zaborowski, producer for Polish outfit Silver Frame and selected for the 2019 Emerging Producers programme
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
Stanisław Zaborowski: I’m a realist with both feet on the ground. I like the genre of documentary film because it’s real. There’s no subject that I’m particularly interested in. We try to develop projects with international potential, which resonate emotionally and offer unforgettable experiences to the viewers. The documentary film is a tool that broadens one’s mind and lets us safely take a peek at life without facing negative consequences. I believe it can trigger social changes. It has also begun to attract more and more viewers to the cinema.
What qualities should a documentary producer have these days?
I think both the director and the producer leave their stamp on every project. Nowadays, the producer of documentary films does much more than just secure financing. While working on a project, I try to inspire its creators and ask them questions to develop the subject and enrich it with new layers. In a way, it feels like opening Russian nesting dolls. Working together on a project for such a long time often results in a relationship based on support and trust.
What do you think is the future of distribution of documentary films?
For the last few years, the documentary film has been enjoying a renaissance. No longer glued to TV networks, it’s become a fully-fledged category, which seems to be booming with the help of the Internet and VOD platforms.
The problem of the documentary film is, however, the diminishing role of television and lower financing levels. Yet, I believe that VOD platforms will take over this responsibility.
What projects do you have under way (including in the area of fiction film and other projects)?
Currently, I’m working on the film titled Welcome to the Other Side directed by Ana Brzezińska. This is a story about getting back to life after a major loss. The film director goes on a journey to find out if she can regain peace and a sense of purpose after losing her father. On her way, she meets people who, just like her, cannot accept how death takes away from us everything we love.
Emerging Producers is a promotional and educational project, which brings together talented European documentary film producers. The programme is organised and curated by the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival.
