Jacques Rivette

Born in Rouen on the 1st of March 1928, he moved to Paris in 1950 where he met Eric Rohmer, François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard.

He began working for the “Gazette du Cinéma” in the same year, moving to “Cahiers du Cinéma” in 1952, where he was editor-inchief from 1963-65.

He made his first short film in 1956. The theatre, conspiracy, secrets and Balzac are all recurring themes in his often unusually long films.

He took part in Competition at the Berlinale in 1989 with The Gang of Four. In 1991 he received the jury award in Cannes for La belle noiseuse.
