Valle dei Calanchi - Bagnoregio (Viterbo)

EUFCN Location Award

The Calanchi Valley is an unusual landscape of eroded clay hills, situated almost half-way between Orvieto (20 km) and Viterbo (30 km). In the middle of the valley is the village of Civita di Bagnoregio, better known as the “dying town” because of the continuous erosion that over the years has reduced the size of the small hill on which it stands. This charming corner of Italy, already inhabited 2500 years ago by the Etruscans, was an active center until many earthquakes and landslides forced the inhabitants to abandon it. The village stretches beyond the valley into an area of particular natural value, alternating with basins and clay crests, resulting from a long and continuous erosion.
