Presentation & Philosophy:

The National Academy for Theatre & Film Arts (NATFA) is located in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria.

The Academy for Theatre and Film Arts was founded in 1948. Since then, for more than half a century, it has contributed enormously to the development of Bulgarian theatre and cinema. Throughout the decades NATFA has enriched and expanded the scope of its educational and training activities. The Academy has provided professional education and training to about 90% of the country's specialists in the fields of screen and stage arts and studies. Many of our alumni have fulfilling and successful careers in their chosen fields of work, in Bulgaria and abroad.

The Academy aspires to foster mobility and international co-operation, to pursue the advancement of knowledge, art and intercultural dialogue. It offers a wide range of courses and disciplines in the fields of screen and stage arts and studies. Its teaching staff consists of distinguished practising artists, critics, researchers and educators, with a deep commitment to their work.

The Mission of the National Academy of Stage and Screen Arts is:

  • to develop as a leading contemporary academic and cultural institution, offering a wide range of specialities and programmes that combine theoretical studies and practical training in the fields of stage and screen arts, theatre and film studies;
  • to prepare highly qualified specialists, who are able to adapt to the dynamically changing cultural and public needs;
  • to develop the knowledge, competencies and skills that will ensure the successful professional realisation of its students;
  • to increase the creative potential, analytical and communicative skills of the students, to encourage informed and independent critical thinking, to broaden their cultural horizons;
  • to foster through its educational activities the democratic values of tolerance, dialogue, co-operation and initiative.

Course content and structure:

The Screen Arts Faculty’s initial degree programmes were opened in 1973. The curriculum in the faculty combines professional training with studies in the liberal arts. Students are provided with a variety of creative experiences, from basic to advanced, in both the conceptual and production phases of film, TV and video products as well as in classical and computer animation.

Intensive coursework is available in a variety of areas including animation, directing and screenwriting as well as in the craft and technical skills of cinematography, design, editing and photography. Classes in film and TV critical studies provide a theoretical and historical perspective to the analysis of artistic endeavours.

Liberal studies in the sciences and humanities are an important part of the educational process and are required of all students, to ensure that they have the background necessary for participation in a profession that influences attitudes, opinions, and ways of thinking in every aspect of human experience.

The teaching staff features the most prominent Bulgarian directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, editors, designers, animators, photographers and critics. The Faculty members are known for their high artistic achievements both in the country and abroad. Their teaching is informed by their rich professional experience, and they aspire to develop curricula and programmes that meet the individual needs of the students and enable them to form their own creative and methodological approaches.
