The executive director of the Film MarketJérôme Paillard, has presented Cinando Subtitles during Ventana Sur in Buenos Aires, the Latin American film market created in 2009 by the Cannes Film Festival's market.

Cinando Subtitles, an online tool launched by Cinando, the first online network for the film industry, managed by the Cannes Film Market, will help players in the sector to search for, find, buy and reuse existing subtitles.

Cinando Subtitles is completely free of charge for Cinando members, and it enables subtitle providers to retain 100% of their revenue and to get in contact with over 300 VoD platforms, 1,500 distributors and 1,700 festivals, which will be able to optimise their work by making the most of this subtitle marketplace. Providers can freely estimate the price, but in any case, Cinando provides advice on pricing through a pricing grid.

As regards quality, subtitles become available only after approval by the Cinando team, which also takes care of the conversion to the TTML standard advanced format. Furthermore, an ISAN number is given to every subtitle, and the Cinando team monitors those who request the service and makes them sign a code of conduct.

This project, supported by the European Commission and by ten players operating in the industry, is aimed at promoting the appeal and distribution of European films.

Paillard stated during the presentation: “I'm thrilled to present this new tool that for the first time will connect subtitle owners such as festivals with industry members searching for them, therefore allowing them to share subtitle costs. Thanks to Cinando Subtitles, the film industry will benefit from a centralised marketplace that will make the subtitling process smooth and cost-effective. I am convinced that this tool will be key to decision making when a distributor or VoD platform is looking to buy a film.”

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is one of the key partners on the project. It has provided the Cinando database with more than 400 subtitles to date. Karel Och (artistic director of the Karlovy Vary IFF) co-presented the project with Paillard at Ventana Sur.
