Shooting gets underway in Marseilles today on L'Immortel (“The Immortal”), the fourth feature by Richard Berry (The Black Box, I, Cesar).

Adapted from Franz-Olivier Giesbert’s eponymous novel, the film is based on the real-life events that brought bloodshed to Marseilles in the 1970s. The cast includes the director, Jean Reno (set to hit screens on March 4 in Inside Ring [+see also:

Written by Berry, the feature centres on revenge-seeking Charlie Mattei (Reno), a retired gangster whose former associates put a price on his head. Having survived a shooting that almost kills him with 22 bullets in his body (inspired by the real-life attack in 1977 on ”godfather” Jacky Le Mat), the Immortal decides to investigate to find out who is behind the violence.

Meanwhile, the police also try to unravel the attempted murder, with Foïs as the detective. Their investigation leads them to cross paths with Tony Zakia (Merad), Charlie’s childhood friend and associate, lawyer Martin Baudinard (Darroussin), and dangerous characters Le Pistachier (Starr) and Aurélio le Finisseur (Berry).

Produced by Luc Besson and Pierre-Ange Le Pogam for EuropaCorp, L'Immortel has a €20m budget. This includes €3.5m in co-production investment and pre-sales from TF1 Films Production. Shooting is scheduled to last 14 weeks: six in Marseilles and eight in Paris.
