Based on the memoirs of Adolf Burger (played here by August Diehl), The Counterfeiters tells of the biggest ever scam by forgerers. In the last years of WWII, the Nazis demanded prisoners of the Sachsenhausen camp to forge millions of pounds sterling in order to weaken the economy of one of its Allies – the UK. The man responsible for the task was Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics), a Jew from Odessa and "counterfeit king", forced to trade his talent for survival.

Distributor Universum released The Counterfeiters on Thursday in Germany. The film's Austrian release has been quasi-simultaneous, opening this Friday through Filmladen.

International sales are being handled by Beta Film.
