After more than 26 years, Kristín Jóhannesdóttir is working on a new feature set in Iceland, called Alma [+see also:

. The director of the successful As in Heaven (selected at the Cannes Film Festival back in 1992) penned the story, about Alma (Snæfríður Ingvarsdóttir), a child who witnessed her father’s brutal murder and who returned with her mother to Iceland, their homeland. In the present day, Alma has been imprisoned in a forensic psychiatric unit for seven years, accused of murdering her lover, even though she cannot remember her crime. When she finds out that her ex-boyfriend is still alive, she plans to escape and kill him for real.

Produced by Gudrún Edda Thórhannesdóttir for Reykjavik-based DUO Productions, Alma has been awarded one million Norwegian crowns (€91,500) by the Nordisk Film & TV Fond. The overall budget of the production is €1.6 million, which has been gathered thanks to the financial support of four co-production partners – namely, LittleBig Productions (Sweden), Arsam International (France), Berserk Films (United Kingdom) and Pegasus Pictures (Iceland), in co-operation with American producer Jim Stark (Adam [+see also:

The cinematography of Alma has been entrusted to Ita Zbroniec-Zajt, who recently worked on Ísold Uggadóttir’s And Breathe Normally [+see also:

Alma is currently in post-production and is being edited by Máni Hrafnsson. No official release date has yet been confirmed by the producers. Icelandic firm Sena Film will handle Alma’s domestic distribution, while Movieboosters (Sweden) holds its Scandinavian rights.
