The big winner of the 14th Zagreb Film Festival (ZFF) was Clash [+see also:

, an Egyptian-French co-production, and the second feature by activist, screenwriter and director Mohamed Diab (known for Cairo 678). The film is set in the summer of 2013 – two years after the Egyptian revolution – and follows the transportation of a number of detained protesters who are struggling to overcome their differences and cooperate in order to survive the day. The winner was chosen from among 13 features by jury members Fred Breinersdorfer, writer and producer; Andreas Dresen, director; and Mira Staleva, deputy director of the Sofia International Film Festival. Special Mentions were given to the Israeli-French film In Between [+see also:

Hamoud’s In Between was also the winner of the HT Audience Award. The film explores the lives of three Palestinian women who share an apartment in Tel Aviv, trying to find a balance between tradition and modernity, and discovering the price of freedom.

The Golden Bicycle Award in the festival’s new “Together Again” competition programme (a line-up of new films by auteurs whose debuts had been screened in the main competition at previous editions of the ZFF) was handed to Romanian director Cristi Puiu for Sieranevada [+see also:

The PLUS Award for Best Youth Film, given out by a jury comprising five high-school students, went to the Austrian film One of Us [+see also:

 by Stephen Richter, a film exploring two teenage boys’ quest to break free from their bleak and monotonous life.

The Golden Pram for Best Short Film was awarded to Balcony by British director Toby Fell-Holden, while in “Checkers”, the Croatian competition for short films, the winner was Baby Tooth by Saša Ban.
