Set in the German-Turkish community in Hamburg, the modern-day thriller hinges on revenge. The script was written by Akin and German writer-director and film professor Hark Bohm (North Sea Is Dead Sea, Yasemin), who also collaborated with Akin on the script for his latest film, Tschick. The plot revolves around the explosion of a bomb, after which a woman takes revenge for her family. The action-packed scene of the explosion, complete with shattered glass, screaming and emergency-vehicle lights, was shot at night in the famous red-light district of St Pauli, with various firemen as extras. Since the police and fire department considered it to be too dangerous to detonate an actual bomb in the neighbourhood, the crew used special effects.

The movie is a German-French co-production, with Akin’s Bombero International partnering up with Warner Bros Film Productions Germany, Mélita Toscan du Plantier and Marie-Jeanne Pascal of Macassar Productions, Corazón International and Pathé. In Germany, the production is supported by the German Federal Film Fund, Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, BKM, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the Federal Film Board. In the Fade will be released theatrically by Warner Bros Pictures Germany in 2017. Cologne-based The Match Factory is handling the international sales.
