According to Ramón Colom, president of the Confederation of Spanish Audiovisual Producers (FAPAE), the tenth edition of the Spanish Screenings has been an outstanding one: “It is an excellent medium for promoting and selling Spanish films in international markets,” he declared. And as if to corroborate his statement, he presented a report analysing the performance of Spanish cinema beyond its national borders: it grossed 51.7% more than it did ten years ago, when the first edition of Madrid de Cine (as it was called at the time) was held, with a total of €160 million raked in by 132 titles.

With 32 films, Mexico is the foreign country that released the most Spanish titles, followed by Italy, Argentina, Colombia and France. It is therefore clear that Latin America, with 47.3%, outperforms Europe – with 39.1% – in terms of distributing Spanish movies. Of the 1,643 cinematic works produced in Europe last year, 15.5% – or 254 – were staged by Spain, thus putting the country in second place. The national share in terms of box-office takings was 19.2%, placing it ninth in Europe in this particular ranking.

The most widely sold features worldwide, which reached over 20 territories and were seen by 26 million viewers, were Wild Tales [+see also:

. In fact, the latter’s producer, José Antonio Félez (of Atípica Films), picked up the FAPAE-Comscore Award for the Spanish film with the strongest international impact. Félez thanked his sales agent, Vicente Canales, of Film Factory Entertainment, for his work.

Alberto Rodríguez’s thriller grossed €12 million and was seen by two million viewers, and of the various prizes it has reaped, the one that thrilled Félez the most was the People's Choice Award that it was given by the European Film Academy (read the news).
