, which was showcased in Directors’ Fortnight in 2015, won the César for Best Film in 2016 (along with the awards for Best Adaptation and Most Promising Actress), and had a very good run in French theatres (with 396,000 admissions), and copious international sales. Amin, the screenplay for which was written by Philippe Faucon, Yasmina Nini-Faucon and Mustapha Kharmoudi, tells a story of immigration through the journey of Amin, who makes the journey from Mauritania alone to come and work in France in the construction sector, sending most of what he earns each month home to his wife Aïcha and three children. But then one day, Amin meets Gabrielle...  The film will be produced by the company set up by the filmmaker and his wife: Istiqlal Films.

Arte France Cinéma will also be backing Loveless by Andrey Zvyagintsev, which will be produced by Russian company Non Stop Production with French company Why Not, German company Senator, and Belgian company Films du Fleuve. Filming is set to take place between August and October in Moscow. Following on from previous works Le Retour (which won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2003), Le Bannissement (shown in competition at Cannes in 2007), Elena (which won the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2011) and Leviathan [+see also:

(which won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes in 2014), the director will once again dissect contemporary Russia (using a screenplay written by his usual partner in crime Oleg Neguin) through the story of a couple on the brink of divorce facing the unexplained disappearance of their 12-year-old son.

The third project that has been chosen is Micro Robert, the first French film of Israeli director Nadav Lapid, which will be produced by Parisian company Les Films des Tournelles with Pie Films. Highly acclaimed for Le Policier (which won the Special Jury Prize at Locarno in 2011) and The Kindergarten Teacher [+see also:

(which had a special screening in Critics’ Week at Cannes in 2014), the director was inspired for his new opus by his own experience upon arriving in Paris. Torn between a host country he feels distant from and a country of origin that he would like to "rip from his very soul", he tries to integrate himself into society with repetitive everyday rituals, like studiously reading the dictionary.

Last but not least, Arte France Cinéma has decided to lend its support to Gabriel et la montagne by Brazilian filmmaker Felipe Barbosa (acclaimed for Casa Grande), which will be co-produced by French company Damned Films.

For the record, Arte France Cinéma will also be funding upcoming films by Bertrand Bonello, Arnaud des Pallières, Sergeï Loznitsa, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Philippe Garrel, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Axelle Ropert, Hafsia Herzi, Caroline Deruas, Rayhana Obermeyer, Thierry de Peretti, Serge Bozon, Samuel Maoz and Karim Moussaoui, documentary projects by Dror Moreh and the pair Agnès Varda - JR, and animated features by Jean-François Laguionie and Michel Ocelot. This year’s Cannes Film Festival also showcased an array of films supported by Arte France Cinéma, most notably films by the likes of Olivier Assayas, Bruno Dumont, Alain Guiraudie, Cristi Puiu, Paul Verhoeven, Michael Dudok de Wit, Mohamed Diab, Sacha Wolff, Davy Chou, Mehmet Can Mertoglu, Alessandro Comodin, and sisters Delphine and Muriel Coulin.
