Song of the Sea by Tomm Moore

Tomm Moore’s Song of the Sea (read the review) has secured seven nominations at the 42nd Annie Awards, the animation industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards. The nominations usually serve as a pointer towards which animation films make the Oscar cut. The film is nominated for Best Animated Feature; Moore, Marie Thorhauge, Sandra Anderson and Rosa Ballester Cabo for Character Design; Moore for Directing; Bruno Coulais and Kila for Music; Adrien Merigeau for Production Design; Will Collins for Writing; and Darragh Byrne for Editorial.

The film is a co-production between Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon, Belgium’s Big Farm, Digital Graphics and Magellan Films, Luxembourg’s Mélusine Productions and Studio 352, Denmark’s Noerlum Studios, and France’s Super Productions, with funding from the Irish Film Board (IFB)

IFB Chief Executive James Hickey said, “As the largest funder for Irish animation content in the country we are delighted to see the Irish animation industry receive so many international plaudits. Universally acclaimed by critics to date, Song of the Sea tells a beautiful story based on Irish mythology and children worldwide will have an opportunity to see the film as it is rolled out in cinemas across the globe over the next few months.”

The film is about a child who is the last of the selkies, women in Irish and Scottish legends who transform from seals into people.

The winners of the Annie Awards will be announced on January 31, 2015.
