The third edition of the Venice Film Market has kicked off with a broad range of industry events and new initiatives. “Up until yesterday, we had 40 sales companies and 134 distributors,” reports Venice Film Market director Pascal Diot, “but most of the professionals are arriving today and tomorrow.” As a business platform for film professionals, the Venice Film Market attracts producers, distributors, buyers, sellers, agents and film promotion agencies from all over the world. This year, the Venice Film Market has started a partnership with Chinese company iQIYI. “The Venice Film Market would like to facilitate exchanges between Europe and the Far East,” underlines Diot, “and thus it is essential for us to work with China and especially the biggest Chinese video platform, which is also starting its own production company.”

A special emphasis has been placed on the Italian industry. The Venice Film Market is launching a special Italian Cinema Industry Focus that brings together Italian producers, sales agents and distributors and international film professionals in daily networking sessions, as well as at panels, conferences and case-study sessions.

As many producers get to experience, gap financing is often hard to find. “Indeed, all the co-production markets focus on the development money, but the last 30% is as difficult to find as the first 30%,” stresses Diot. “It is our policy to place more of an emphasis on financing completion, post-production and distribution, as we also do with our initiatives Final Cut in Venice, Biennale College Cinema and Meet the CICAE Independent Exhibitors.” Fifteen projects have been selected for the European Gap Financing Co-Production Market, which takes place on 29 and 30 August, among them several Italian projects such as Mountain [+see also:

The Venice Film Market also boasts an exclusive networking session between international sales agents and independent exhibitors from CICAE, which will include a presentation of trailers as well as one-to-one meeting sessions. The Venice Film Market is taking place until Tuesday 2 September.
