Four days ahead of the unveiling of the Cannes International Film Festival’s official programme, German director Fatih Akin has retracted his new movie, The Cut [+see also:

, which had been submitted to the 67th edition of the festival, “for personal reasons”. This new drama is the final part of Akin’s Love, Death and the Devil trilogy, which also incorporates the Berlinale Golden Bear winner Head-On [+see also:

While Head-On was about love and romance, and The Edge of Heaven dealt with death, The Cut focuses on the evil inherent in mankind. The lead is played by French actor Tahar Rahim, who was internationally acclaimed for playing the title role in Jacques Audiard’s prison drama, A Prophet [+see also:

, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2009. Fascinated by Rahim’s powerful performance as an imprisoned petty criminal of Algerian origin who rises up the inmate hierarchy, Akin cast the newcomer in his Western as a mute, Sergio Leone-type character.

The Cut is produced by Akin’s Hamburg-based production outfit Corazón International, Bombero International and Pandora Film, in co-production with French firm Pyramide Productions. German distributor Pandora Film has scheduled The Cut’s release for 16 October 2014. Due to the Cannes withdrawal, the film is set to premiere at an international festival, such as Venice or Toronto, in the autumn. Akin has twice attended the Mostra del Cinema: in 2009, he won the Special Jury Prize for his comedy Soul Kitchen [+see also:
