The Hobbit leads Empire nominations with seven nods
12 Years A Slave has been nominated for Best Film, among other awards

The irreverent and popular Empire Awards are back for their 19th edition. The antidote to more formal, industry-voted prizes, they are voted for entirely by the cinema-going public. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the fourth highest-grossing film at the UK box office in 2013, leads this year’s shortlist with seven nominations, followed by six nominations for 12 Years A Slave [+see also:

British director Paul Greengrass will receive the Empire Inspiration Award at the ceremony for his work on the Bourne trilogy and the recent commercial and critical success Captain Phillips, for which he is also nominated in the Best Director category.

The awards will be presented on 30 March.
