The jury of the 67th edition of the Cannes Film Festival (May 14 – 25, 2014) will be presided by the filmmaker, producer and screenwriter from New Zealand, Jane Campion, who takes over from US director Steven Spielberg.

It is the 11th time that a woman will preside the jury of the competition in Cannes after Olivia de Havilland (1965), Sophia Loren (1966), Michèle Morgan (1971), Ingrid Bergman (1973), Jeanne Moreau (1975 and 1995), Françoise Sagan (1979), Isabelle Adjani (1997), Liv Ullmann (2001) and Isabelle Huppert (2009).

Winner of the Palme d'Or in 1993 with The Piano (which also won the Best Actress Award on the Croisette before winning five Oscars including Best Director and Best Screenplay), Jane Campion also won the Palme d'Or for the Best Short Film in 1986, a double victory never achieved by anyone else. She took part in the competition another two times with Sweetie (her first feature) in 1989 and Bright Star [+see also:

in 2009. It is worth noting that An Angel at my Table and Holy Smoke were selected in competition in Venice in 1990 and 1999, the former going on to win a Special Grand Prix of the Jury.

"I came to Cannes for the first time in 1986 and since, my admiration for the queen of film festivals has only increased. The glamour and professionalism blend in a unique way. It is the country of stars, parties, beaches and business, but we do not lose sight that the festival is a celebration of cinema as an Art and a celebration of films from around the world,” commented Jane Campion. "Passion makes Cannes the unquestionable best. It is a cult and surprising place where actors are revealed, films find producers and careers begin. I know it: it happened to me. It is a great honour for me to be chosen to preside over the jury, and to tell you the truth: I cannot wait!”

"It makes me very proud that Jane Campion has accepted to preside the jury" said Thierry Frémaux, the festival’s General Delegate, with enthusiasm. "From a country and continent where cinema is rare and powerful, she is amongst these filmmakers who perfectly embody the idea that cinema can be made artistically and still attract a worldly audience. We know that her personal high standards will be those of the jury.” An opinion shared by Gilles Jacob, the President of the Cannes event, who celebrates the style and poetry of the director from New Zealand, whom he nicknamed "Lady Jane".
