(eight Goya awards and almost €9 million made in 2009). Even if the box office situation couldn’t be more removed than what it was in 2009, the action rich thriller starring Luis Tosar should be one to watch in 2014.

El niño is set in a world of drug trafficking, on the southern edge of Europe, “a hot and famous enclave around the world, but strangely largely ignored by the cinema world up until today,” Monzón told the cinema academy magazine, defining his latest work as “a modern adventure story, real and recognisable.”

The story, written by Monzón together with Jorge Guerricaechaverría, stars two teenagers on the one side, El Niño and El Compi, who want to enter the world of drug trafficking, and two police officers on the other, Jesús and Eva, who have been trying to eradicate the drug trafficking network for years.

Starring alongside Tosar, the cast includes Sergi López, Eduard Fernández, Luis Motilla, Jesús Carroza, Bárbara Lennie, Jesús Castro and Moussa Maaskri. Filming started in April and lasted eleven weeks across Algeciras, Gibraltar, Ceuta, Morocco, Almería and the Canary Islands.

With a budget amounting to €6 million, El niño was produced by Emma Lustres and Borja Pena for Vaca Films (Cell 211), Edmon Roch for Ikiru Films, Ghislain Barrois and Álvaro Augustín for Telecinco Cinema, Javier Ugarte for Maestranza Films, Jordi Gasull for El Toro Pictures and Franck Ribiere for French La Ferme.

Release date is forecast to be in the first half of 2014 with Fox.
