by Janos Szasz, which is based on the famous novel of the same name by Agota Kristof (who died in July 2011), is amongst the 14 feature films selected for the international competition at the 48th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (from June 28th to July 6th, 2013).

Focusing on twins growing up in a village during the Second World War and committing cruel acts to survive in the absurd world of adults, the film’s cast features young actors Andras and Lazlo Gyemant, Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen, Hungarian actresses Piroska Molnar and Orsi Toth, as well as German actor Ulrich Mathes.

This is Janos Szasz’s 5th feature film after Szédülés (1990), Woytech and The Whitman Boys (Hungarian candidates for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1995 and 1998) and Opium - A Madwoman’s Diary (Best Director, Best Cinematography and Foreign Critics' Award in the Hungarian Film Week 2007).

Produced by the Hungarian company Hunnia Filmstudio (Hungary), The Notebook was coproduced by Intuit Pictures (Germany), Amour Fou (Austria) and Dolce Vita Films (France), with funding from the Magyar company Filmalap, the MDM, MBB, the Media programme, Eurimages, Wiener Filmfund, CNC, DFFF and FISA. International sales will be handled by Beta Cinema.
