was nominated for an Oscar as Best Foreign-Language Feature, has been signed by US director-producer Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks to film a new version of UK director Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca.

Arcel, who is already attached to adapt US author Don Winslow’s best-selling novel The Power of the Dog with his Danish script-writer partner Rasmus Heisterberg, confirmed to Danish film magazine Ekko that the deal was on. "It will be a radically new interpretation of the novel, not a remake. Think epic drama," Arcel said.

Based on UK author Daphne de Maurier’s 1938 novel, Rebecca was the first film made by Hitchcock after he moved to Los Angeles aged 40. Arcel, also 40, is currently living in Hollywood with Heisterberg; besides the Winslow adaptation and Rebecca “there is a third US project which will be announced in two weeks, so there is plenty to do".

UK-US actress Joan Fontaine and UK actor Laurence Olivier starred in Hitchcock’s take on the young woman who marries a rich widower and moves to his gigantic estate in Cornwall. She soon realises that the memory of his first wife, who died under strange circumstances, maintains a grip on her husband and his servant, Mrs Danvers.

Hitchcock’s black and white mystery-drama-thriller won an Oscar for Best Picture; Arcel’s will be scripted by US writer Steven Knight (Eastern Promises [+see also:
