The Romanian film-industry awards gala, the Gopos, took place last night, and the evening came with quite a surprise: in spite of very strong competition, Paul Negoescu’s Men of Deeds [+lire aussi :

took home the most important awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Iulian Postelnicu) and Best Screenplay (Radu Romaniuc, Oana Tudor). The Awards for Best Editing (Eugen Kelemen) and Best Supporting Actor (Vasile Muraru) rounded off the list of gongs that Men of Deeds won at the gala. A total of 650 film professionals and critics were involved in the voting process.

One must go as far back as 2018 to find a film that won four of the so-called “big five” (Best Film, Best Directing, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay). At that time, Daniel Sandu's One Step Behind the Seraphim [+lire aussi :

scooped the trophies for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Vlad Ivanov) and Best Screenplay, but it must be stressed that at this year’s edition, the competition was much stronger, with a host of good films among the 37 considered. In 2018, only 23 features were eligible for a nomination.

was the other big winner of the evening, taking home four of the so-called “technical” awards: Best Cinematography (Tudor Vladimir Panduru), Best Art Direction (Bogdan Ionescu), Best Costumes (Ioana Covalciuc), and Best Make-up and Hairstyling (Irina Ianciuş, Marie-Pierre Hattabi).

The Best First Film Award went to Monica Stan and George Chiper-Lillemark’s Immaculate [+lire aussi :

and the Best Documentary Award to Oana Bujgoi Giurgiu’s Occasional Spies. As almost always happens, there was a film, Bogdan George Apetri’s Miracle [+lire aussi :

, which received nine nominations, including in all of the “big five” categories, without winning a single award.
