Coup d'envoi des ateliers MFI Script 2 Film élargis

Cet article est disponible en anglais.

The Mediterranean Film Institute (MFI) needs little in the way of an introduction. With a strong specialism in script and project development since 1998, the organisation has welcomed over 700 European filmmakers, and developed in excess of 400 projects - most of which are now multi-award-winning – as part of the Institute’s main programme: the MFI Script 2 Film Workshops.

In celebration of this impressive 20-year track-record, the MFI is looking to introduce new features into this year’s edition of the event. Having selected 25 feature-length scripts out of the 100+ applications submitted, the 49 filmmakers behind these screenplays, alongside 5 participants yet to develop a project, will take part in the valuable training opportunity that is the 2018 MFI Script 2 Film Workshops, which kick off today, 19 June, with the first session running until 2 July on the Greek island of Nisyros.

The first new initiative taken by the MFI this year is to expand its offering to include TV series development, with the launch of the TV LAB. This programme will centre on the Greek and European markets, with 6 TV series scripts having already been selected for this inaugural session. Projects will be developed under the watchful eye of two MFI alumni: Gabor Krigler, Script Development Executive at HBO Europe, and Michel Sabbe, writer/script consultant at Flemish VRT & VTM and RTBF TV.

TV LAB’s honorary guest will be the acclaimed American director, Dan Attias, who, amongst other projects, is known for his work on HBO series The Wire, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, True Detective, Deadwood as well as Homeland, Lost, and The Killing. Attias will attend the workshop in Nisyros and will provide individual consultations to participants, but the highlight of the programme will be the masterclass he is set to deliver on 24 June: “Filmmaking: The Collaborative Art”.

Also new to the MFI Script 2 Film Workshop this year is a Berlinale Residency. Organized by the MFI, Villa Kult, and director of the latter, Renate Roginas, the residency will invite the talent behind 5 of the participating projects to attend intensive development seminars and networking events during the 2019 edition of the Berlinale.

It’s worth noting the team who are set to deliver script training this year, providing participants with invaluable guidance and advice, which is headed up in this instance by Christina Lazaridi and includes scriptwriter and tutor Jan Fleischer, screenwriter and novelist Nicos Panayotopoulos, director and screenwriter Dimitris Yatzouzakis, script consultant Ana Sanz Magallon, screenwriter and director Dimitris Emmanouilidis, and Co-Head of Studies at ScriptEast, Christian Routh.

In terms of production and project development, leading professionals delivering training in the field include producer Simon de Santiago, film marketing expert Nicolò Gallio, head of Connecting Cottbus, Marjorie Bendeck, former director of FAMU International Giovanni Robbiano, and producer Isabelle Fauvel. The programme will also benefit from the expertise of Martina Bleis, Liz Rosenthal, Vanesa Arteaga, and Brigid O’Shea.

MFI’s Script 2 Film Workshops are supported by the Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT SA), the Greek National Centre for Audio-Visual Media and Communication (EKOME SA), the Secretariat General for the Aegean and Island Policy, and the municipalities of Nisyros and Rhodes.
