"Cinema moves and fluctuates" at Pesaro Film Fest, states Pedro Armocida, the artistic director of the historic event, which is now in its 54th edition. This year, the festival (which is due to take place from 16 to 23 June) will give ample space to some rather more "free-thinking" and unconventional films.
Pesaro Film Fest’s Nuovo Cinema competition includes six debut and second films in world, international or Italian premiere. This year’s selection includes John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection [+lee también:
ficha del filme] by the French director Julien Faraut – a commentary on one of the greatest tennis players of all time and a mix of repertoire images, psychological elements and film theory – with narration provided by Mathieu Amalric (Wanted will be releasing the film in Italy), and a film with an unpronounceable title – given that it consists of a star symbol, (*) – by Austrian director Johann Lurf, a film that includes a montage of starry skies caught on camera throughout the history of cinema. Italy also features in the competition with the documentary Beware! The Dona Ferentes by Daniele Pezzi, which is about one of the greatest protagonists of the underground music scene. Judging the films in competition this year is a student jury and a professional jury composed of the actress Tea Falco, director Paolo Franchi and Stefano Savona, recently awarded at Cannes for best documentary (Samouni Road [+lee también:

This year’s edition will be focusing on women in Italian cinema, with an all-female section including seven titles (such as Daughter of Mine [+lee también:

ficha del filme] by Roberta Torre) and a series of meetings with various filmmakers, such as Bispuri, Torre, Sonia Bergamasco, Lucia Mascino, Giada Colagrande and Antonietta De Lillo, among others. This year, the all-female theme extends to a section dedicated to contemporary Russian cinema, with four feature films (fiction and non-fiction) and a short film, all directed by women, including Pagans by Lera Surkova.
The 54th edition of Pesaro Film Fest will also be focusing on the year 1968, with a retrospective that intends to celebrate the creative energy of that year (which was also marked by the first protest at an international festival in Italy). Among the titles in the program are Umano, non umano by Mario Schifano and Dionysus in ’69 by Brian De Palma.
Finally, the avant-garde and non-competitive section Satellite – Visioni per il cinema includes 20 very low budget and unusually-formatted Italian films, in order to investigate audiovisual productions that aren’t necessarily in the spotlight. There will also be a retrospective – Personale Marc’O – dedicated to the brilliant French filmmaker, Marc-Gilbert Guillaumin, born in 1927. It will be the first retrospective outside France to be dedicated to the director.
