As expected, Senator Giulio Andreotti did not at all like Paolo Sorrentino’s much-anticipated Il Divo [+see also:

(“The Deity”), in competition at Cannes. The former (and seven-time) Italian Prime Minister, who saw it at a private screening with a journalist from Italian daily La Repubblica, called the film centering on his political persona "a nasty trick, mean and malicious".

According to the journalist, Andreotti was barely able in to watch the entire film on the long period of Italian history of which he was often protagonist (in the film he is played by Toni Servillo), saying "What will I tell my wife tonight?”

"I don’t know ‘which’ Andreotti will come out in my film," Sorrentino said recently. "He is an enigmatic man, neither arrogant nor humble, immobile and whispering. But one thing is sure – it is difficult to tarnish Andreotti, a man who, more than the rest of us, knows how to make his way in this world".
