European actors make a splash. No Country completes awards sweep

The Coen brothers’ dark drama No Country For Old Men continued its stranglehold over this year’s awards, picking up Oscars for best film, best director, best adapted screenplay and best supporting actor for Spanish star Javier Bardem.

In what was virtually a replay of the BAFTAs, European cinema put up a strong show with British actor Daniel Day Lewis winning best actor for There Will Be Blood, French actress Marion Cotillard winning best actress for La Vie En Rose [+see also:

and British actress Tilda Swinton winning best supporting actress for Michael Clayton.

by Stefan Ruzowitzky (see interview) won the best foreign language film award. The British Isles scored big in the music stakes with italian composer Dario Marianelli winning best score for Atonement [+see also:

and Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova winning best song (Falling Slowly) for Irish film Once [+see also:

Italian veteran Dante Ferretti, along with Francesca Lo Schiavio, picked up the art director Oscar for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street while Didier Lavergne and Jan Archibald won best make up for La Vie En Rose.

Though Cate Blanchett was overlooked in the acting stakes, Alexandra Byrne won the best costume design Oscar for her work on Elizabeth: The Golden Age [+see also:

. European cinema fared well in the short film departments too with British filmmaker Suzie Templeton’s Peter & The Wolf winning the animated short Oscar. French filmmaker Philippe Pollet-Villard won the best live action short award for Le Mozart des Pickpockets.
