2005: Italian cinema on the rise

by

2005 marked a growth for Italian cinema, at least as far as its share of the domestic market is concerned. The quota reached 25%, with an increase of four percent in respect to the previous year. The good news for Italian production comes from data compiled by Cinetel, which monitors 74% of the country’s first-run screens. Italian cinema, including co-productions, gained over 3 million admissions in the period between 2003-2005, passing from 19.2 to 22.4 million tickets sold.

The news is not as good, however, for exhibitors, who in 2005 lost approximately 7 million admissions with respect to the previous year. Most penalized were US films, which in 2005 had 12 million Italian admissions less as compared to 2004. According to trade paper Notizie di Spettacolo, between 2003 and 2005, US films lost almost eleven points of the market share in Italian audiences, dropping from 64% (2003) to 53% (2004).
