film profile]) is shooting his upcoming mini-series Eden, commissioned by ARTE. Created by Edward Berger, Nele Mueller-Stöfen and Marianne Wendt, the series deals with the migration crisis in Europe, as seen from various points of view – from Brussels’ European Commission, via the lives of the refugees who arrive on the continent, to the reactions of the local society. Comprising six 45-minute episodes, Eden takes place in Germany, France and Greece.

As a group of tourists are enjoying their holiday on a Greek beach, suddenly a dinghy is stranded in front of them. Around 50 refugees rush off the boat before their very eyes and run away. This unexpected incident will be seen from different perspectives and will change the destinies of so many different characters: a German family that decides to host a migrant, a French director of a private company that is managing refugee camps, a Greek camp warden who feels guilty, a Nigerian migrant who tries to escape, and a Syrian family seeking political asylum in Paris.

The script has been written by Bernd Lange, Constantin Lieb and Laurent Mercier, and an international cast is on board to portray the protagonists, as the dialogue is in five languages: German, French, English, Greek and Arabic. film profile]). Kurdish actor Adnan Jafar’s real-life story is similar to that of Bassam, the Syrian refugee he plays. He had to escape from Afrin and follow a path through Greece and the Balkans to reach Munich, while spending two years in refugee camps.

After finishing the first tranche of shooting in Germany, the series has now moved to Greece to continue at the Refugee Accommodation Centre in Scaramanga, near Athens, and will continue shooting there until the end of the month. It is worth mentioning that Eden is the first international production to receive the newly introduced 25% cash-rebate scheme that was introduced by the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media and is administrated by the National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication (EKOME SA). The local production services are handled by Fenia Cossovitsa for Blonde SA. After Greece, shooting will continue in Paris for five weeks.

Eden is a French-German co-production by Lupa Film, Atlantique Productions (Lagardère Studios) and Port Au Prince with ARTE France, ARTE Germany, SWR and ARD Degeto and with the support of MFG Baden-Württemberg. The premiere on ARTE is planned for February 2019.
