TV series Perfume set to intoxicate audiences

Patrick Süskind's sublime bestseller, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, published in 1985 and adapted into a feature film by Tom Tykwer in 2006, has inspired a new series directed by seasoned TV director Philipp Kadelbach (known for series such as the international Emmy award-winning Generation War and SS-GB, and currently preparing for the November release of his rock band comeback-themed feature Comeback [+see also:

, produced by Universum Film and starring Jürgen Vogel, Jan Josef Liefers, alongside German band, Scorpions). The first two episodes of this intriguing murder series are due to world-premiere at the Munich Film Festival this year (28 June-7 July).

Shifting central elements of the famous novel to a modern-day setting, Perfume tells the story of a young, headstrong profiler with a rather unusual investigative approach. While gathering evidence after a series of brutal murders are reported in the Lower Rhine valley, our main character is taken back in time by one of his leads and told the tale of five boarding school pupils experimenting with the mysteries of human scent in their lust for power and for love.

The gradual eclipsing of reality by fiction and the unscrupulous manipulation of others’ feelings are just two of the themes explored in the series, scripted by Eva Kranenburg, produced by Constantin Film Produktion (who previously produced Tykwer's film of the same name) in co-production with MOOVIE, ZDF, ZDFneo, ARRI Media, and in co-operation with Netflix (a first for Munich-based Constantin), with the support of regional German funds NRW (€1 million), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and FFF Bayern. Featuring among the cast are Friederike Becht (The Reader), Juergen Maurer (Tatort), Wotan Wilke Möhring (Valkyrie) and Natalia Belitski, alongside August Diehl (The Young Karl Marx [+see also:

).

Shot in the German state North Rhine-Westphalia from August to December last year, the first six-part series of Perfume will premiere on ZDFneo this autumn, at which point viewers outside of Germany will also be able to access the series via Netflix. Following on from this transmission window, international sales to more traditional broadcasters (namely freeview and pay TV) will be handled by Beta Film.
